Jovan is a 5-year old Aeta boy from the mountains of Capas,Tarlac. His father seated to my left, told me that they speak Zamal, (Zamal) if my memory doesn't fail me.
I was humbled by this boy because he talked to me in Tagalog. I realized that he knows more what I do not know which made me think that a person may be good in some things, but absolutely not in all things. He respected our language barrier and told many stories about their life in the mountain. He could have run away from me and went to his mother. He made me think of simplicity, being thankful and giving without expecting in return.
I realized that if this little guy had formal education and had an encounter with psychologist Jean Piaget, an advocate of children's education will be delighted. My undergraduate thesis is about level of intelligence among rural high school students which made me admire Piaget for his theories in Psychology of Learning and Cognitive Development
Jovan was very energetic. According to his father he is popular among his playmates. He was very curious and very excited to hold our cameras. The next thing I know he was taking pictures and posing in front of both still and video cameras. He quickly learn instructions, speak confidently and as far as my alter ego is concerned, he has high comprehension skills.
As we know it, Christmas is about giving. But to share some blessings to a boy like Jovan is really something worth remembering and Christmas more meaningful. :)
